Travel guide

How do I get to my safari, and how do we travel between parks?

Published

The short answer

Most travellers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 40 kilometres from Arusha, and your guide is waiting outside the terminal. Between the northern parks you travel by road in your safari vehicle, and many journeys end with a short flight from a Serengeti airstrip back to Arusha.

Most of our journeys begin and end in Arusha, the town at the foot of Mount Meru on the road to the northern parks.

Flying in

International guests usually land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 40 kilometres from Arusha. Your guide meets you outside the terminal and drives you to your first night in Arusha. Arusha's own airport, on the western edge of town, handles domestic flights.

Between the parks

You travel by road in your safari vehicle, with your guide. On our itineraries the drives from Arusha are roughly:

From Arusha to Time on the road
Arusha National Park A day trip, back in town for dinner
Tarangire Less than two hours
Lake Manyara About 130 kilometres
Ngorongoro Crater About three hours

The Serengeti is reached by road through the Ngorongoro highlands, or by scheduled light aircraft to the park's airstrips.

Flying back from the Serengeti

Many journeys end with a flight from a Serengeti airstrip back to Arusha: about an hour from the central Serengeti, and about an hour and a half from Kogatende in the north.

To Zanzibar

After your safari you fly to Zanzibar from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, and our representative meets you on arrival.

Starting in Kenya

Our fifteen-day journey starts at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and crosses into Tanzania by road at Namanga, on the way from Amboseli to Arusha.

Luggage on small planes

Light aircraft allow 15 kg per person in a soft bag, and extra weight may be charged. Anything you do not need on safari can be stored in Arusha while you travel.
