Tanzania safari questions, answered

Published

The short answer

Most travellers on a Tanzania safari want to know about group size, children, vehicles, meals, luggage, money and tipping. Our safaris are private unless you choose a shared group, there is no age limit, and you travel in a Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a window seat each.

These are the questions travellers ask us most often before they book. If yours is not here, ask us: we would rather answer it before you travel than after.

Questions travellers ask

How many people travel together on a safari?

On a private safari, only the people in your own party share the vehicle. If you choose to join a shared group safari, there can be up to six or seven travellers in one vehicle, depending on where each person is staying.

Is there an age limit for a safari?

There is no minimum or maximum age, and we are happy to plan family safaris. Many camps and some lodges are unfenced, so children must stay with their parents at all times.

What vehicle will we travel in?

A well-maintained 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing. Every passenger has a window seat.

Are meals included?

Yes, all meals during the safari are included, except breakfast on the first day and dinner on the last. On a camping safari our cook prepares fresh food at camp; on a lodge safari you eat breakfast and dinner at the lodge. On game drives you have a picnic lunch and drinking water. Alcohol and snacks are extra. Tell us about any dietary needs or allergies and we will plan around them.

How much luggage can I bring?

Space in the vehicle is limited, so please bring no more than 15 kg in a soft bag or rucksack, plus a small bag for cash, camera, phone and documents. Please leave hard suitcases behind. Anything you do not need on safari can be stored safely while you travel; ask us how we will handle it around your airport transfers.

Should I bring cash?

Yes, for souvenirs, snacks, drinks and tips. Bring US dollars, euros or pounds; ATMs give Tanzanian shillings only. US dollar notes must be recent and in good condition, because older notes are often refused.

Should we tip?

Tipping is customary in Tanzania, and guides and cooks count on it as part of their income. As a guide, we suggest 20 US dollars a day for your guide and 15 US dollars a day for the cook on a camping safari, shared across your group and given at the end of the safari.

Do I need a visa and vaccinations?

Most visitors need a tourist visa and a passport valid for at least six months. Rules and fees change, so check with your embassy before you travel. Ask your doctor about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and bring your Yellow Fever certificate if you have one, as you may be asked for it on arrival.

How long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Between five and nine days, depending on the route. See the Kilimanjaro page.

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

January to early March and June to October. See the Kilimanjaro page.
